Buying a Car Out of State

In Massachusetts and Rhode Island, it’s common to cross state lines multiple times a day for work, shopping, entertainment, and more. Therefore, you might consider buying a car in a state where you don’t reside. If you're exploring this option, it's important to be aware of the specific requirements set by your state for out-of-state vehicle purchases. Here’s a detailed guide to help you navigate the process smoothly!

If you live in Massachusetts and want to buy a car from another state, you will need:

1. An active insurance policy.

2. A stamped and completed application for registration and title from a licensed Massachusetts insurance agent.

3. Complete and accurate lienholder information if applicable.

4. The bill of sale.

5. A manufacturers’ certificate of origin if you’re buying a new car, the previous owner’s certificate of title if you’re buying a used car or dealer reassignment form if applicable. Be sure that these documents include the date of sale, odometer reading, sale price and your and the dealer or previous owner’s signatures on the back.

6. The previous vehicle registration if the car is exempt from titles due to age.
